Aftermarket Product Growth

Foreign nameplates are generating a growing portion of total aftermarket product growth as they expand their car and light truck product share in the U.S.

Foreign nameplates averaged one-third of aftermarket product volume during 1999 to 2009. However, their share of aftermarket product growth over this ten-year span was even greater.

1999 to 2009: 70% Growth Share

Foreign nameplate cars and light trucks rapidly expanded their aftermarket product share in the U.S. during this ten-year span, climbing from approximately 35% of car and light truck product volume to over 42%. However, their share of aftermarket product growth was much larger.

Lang Marketing estimates foreign nameplates accounted for over 70% of the $13 billion surge in car and light truck products between 1999 and 2009.

2009 to 2019: 90% Growth Share

Although Lang Marketing has not yet completed its 2019 analysis of aftermarket product volume, they estimate foreign nameplates topped 48% of aftermarket product sales last year.

The estimated $24 billion increase in foreign nameplate aftermarket product volume between 2009 and 2019 generated nearly 90% of light vehicle aftermarket product growth during this 10-year span.

Foreign Nameplate Product Growth Rate

The growing contribution of foreign nameplates to aftermarket product growth is a product of their surging aftermarket product growth rate between 1999 and 2019.

Domestic light vehicle product volume climbed less than 1% annually during this twenty-year span, while foreign nameplate car and light truck product sales soared at more than nine times this annual pace.

Preliminary 2019 Estimates

Lang Marketing estimates (on a preliminary basis) that foreign nameplates accounted for over 95% of total 2019 aftermarket product growth. This is approximately twice their share of car and light truck 2019 product volume.

Foreign nameplates extended their light vehicle 2019 product volume at a rate over ten times stronger than the 2019 growth pace of aftermarket products for domestic nameplates, according to Lang’s preliminary estimates.

Lang’s Projections: 2020 through 2025

The foreign nameplate share of aftermarket product growth will increase over the next five years.

Lang Marketing projects that foreign nameplates will generate all light vehicle aftermarket product growth during 2020 through 2024.

Foreign Nameplate Aftermarket Drivers

The strength of foreign nameplate new light vehicle sales over the past five years and their projected dominant new vehicle market share between now and 2024 will ensure their expanding volume and share of aftermarket products.
