See what makes us different ...
and the same!

Posted 5/15/2012

More than 90 percent of ASA member-shops are family-owned businesses, according to our 2011 AutoInc. readership survey. Learn what different generations from the same shop are thinking and how they are relating. In this month’s “Generationally Speaking,” meet Mike Jewell, co-owner and founder of Jewell Auto; and Sarah Jewell Nurse, his daughter, who is co-owner and general manager of the shop in Fort Worth, Texas.

Who do you trust the most?
My family and my faithful employees.

What is the best decision you have ever made?
Getting married and having three wonderful daughters.

Best book you’ve ever read?
The Bible

How did you get into the automotive service and repair business?
I had an absolutely fabulous mentor who was in another area of the automotive business. I call him “Dad.” He introduced me to cars.

Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by the example that my parents have established as they live their lives. They have been and continue to be an incredible example of faithfulness to each other. They instilled in me a work ethic that has served me so well over the years.

What do you drive?
2012 K3500 Chevrolet Crew Cab Dooly

If you had a free weekend by yourself, what would you do?
Just about anything outdoors. I love to hunt, fish and work around the farm.

What advice would you give a young person who is graduating from high school today?
Find a career you love and pursue it with passion.

What do you like most about your work?
I love cars!

What is one electronic gadget you cannot live without?
My office computer – it keeps me in touch with the details relating to my customers’ cars.

Speaking on behalf of your generation, how do you see the future of the industry?
I am excited about the future of our industry. There are always opportunities for people who can accept and embrace change.

Who do you trust the most?
My husband and my dad.

What is the best decision you have ever made?
Marrying my husband, Greg, and starting a family!

Best book you’ve ever read?
The Bible

How did you get into the automotive service business?
Originally I started by handing my daddy tools when he was under a car in the driveway. Now the two of us are running an automotive repair business that he started way back when.

Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired daily to do better for my family. I would say that looking into the eyes of my 2-year-old son, Maddox, is the best inspiration I’ve ever had.

What do you drive?
2012 Infiniti QX56

If you had a free weekend by yourself, what would you do?
With a 2-year-old, the thought of a weekend alone seems foreign to me. However, if I did, it would include a great pair of sunglasses, sand in my toes and the sound of waves nearby.

What piece of advice would you give a young person who is graduating from high school today?
Remember that following the trends/rules of society do not equate to happiness or dream fulfillment. We need trained and educated people in various industries and trades to make this world go around. Find something you are happy doing, something that is challenging yet realistic. Pursue it with passion and Rock On! Our work should not define us … faith and family are always first!

What do you like most about your work?
I dearly love our customers. Many of them have been with us from the very beginning. Most importantly, I am continually motivated by the fact that my work every day supports our family business. I also love that I get to spend my working hours with my dad, who is one of my best friends.

What is one electronic gadget you cannot live without?
My iPhone – it keeps my calendar, it keeps me connected and it occasionally keeps my kiddo entertained when I don’t seem to be able to!

Speaking on behalf of your generation, how do you see the future of the industry?
I see it as ever changing. It is impossible to be fully trained in this industry because as soon as you think you know it all … something changes! The channels in which we are staying connected to our customers have also changed over the past decade. The days of postcards in the mail have been replaced with emails and social media. Customers desire and demand to be reached out to through a channel that works for them. Keeping up with the changes in the industry as well as the need for relevant marketing and networking are so important.

In future issues, we are inviting different generations from each shop (you don’t have to be related) to participate in the “Generationally Speaking” department. If you are interested, please send AutoInc. Editor Leona Dalavai Scott a quick note at leonad@asashop.org.
