and the same!

More than 90 percent of ASA member-shops are family-owned businesses, according to our 2011 AutoInc. Readership Survey. Learn what different generations from the same shop are thinking and how they are relating in this competitive and customer-driven industry. In this month’s “Generationally Speaking” department, meet Joe Sevart, owner of I-70 Auto Service in Kansas City, Mo., and Tyler Hubbard, shop manager.

2000 Subaru Outback

What do you think about when you’re brushing your teeth in the morning?

Man, I cannot wait to get some caffeine in my bloodstream.

What is the best decision that you have ever made?
Transferring to Wartburg College after my second year in college. That decision has had a positive impact on my life in so many different ways I cannot even count.

Drink of choice:
Coffee or Monster [energy drink]

How did you get into the automotive service business?
I actually got into the automotive industry over a round of golf.  I was playing in a tournament with my Uncle Joe when he overheard that I was looking for a new job. A few conversations later I was down at the shop learning how to become a service adviser.

Show that you have to record if you miss it:
I do not have a show I really have to watch, but any Manchester City soccer game I must see.

What do you drive?
A 1982 Chevrolet C20 pickup.

If you had a free weekend by yourself, what would you do?
You would either find me fishing, or if I was by a mountain I would be snowboarding.

What piece of advice would you give a young person who is graduating from high school today?
Do not rush life. Do the things you want to now, and take the time to experience as much as you can.

What do you like most about your work?
I love customer service. Having the opportunity to talk to so many different people on a daily basis is the best part about my job. Also the fact that people usually come in with a problem and hopefully they leave my shop with a smile.

Favorite musician or favorite type of music?
Favorite musician would have to be Van Morrison. I can listen to his “Moondance” album all day.

In future issues, we are inviting different generations from each shop (you don’t have to be related) to participate in the “Generationally Speaking” department. If you are interested, please send AutoInc. Editor Leona Dalavai Scott a quick note at leonad@asashop.org.
