How Do We Respond in Hard Times?

Posted 9/10/2009
By Earl Dohner, AAM, Chairman

Earl DohnerI want to share with my fellow ASA members 24 words that have helped me over the years when it comes to making decisions. As an active Rotarian, this set of four simple questions is one that has helped mold my life.

For decades, what is called "The Four-Way Test" - which was created in 1932 by a Rotarian and adopted by the Rotary Club as its code of ethics - has been used around the world. It measures ethical conduct and helps one develop respect and understanding. But perhaps more than anything else, the ethical standard represented by the test is the single most important link.

It underscores our commitment to business and personal integrity.

I have found that you cannot constantly and consistently apply The Four-Way Test without getting into the habit of doing so in your home environment, social life and your community life. Thus, you become a better spouse, father or mother, a better friend, and quite frankly, a better citizen.

And now, the test:

1. Is it the truth?

2. Is it fair to all concerned?

3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Here's a question from one repair shop owner to another: What are you going to do with these four questions in light of what is happening in today's market? During these challenging times?

I hope this simple test will help you as much as it has helped me over the years.

And on a final note, ASA has launched its annual "How's Your Business?" survey and I strongly encourage every member to participate this year. It helps our association highlight the current status of the independent segment of our great industry, and all regular (shop) members should participate. We've moved the survey online, so it's easier to complete than ever before, and all shop participants completing the survey may download "AutoInc.'s 2009 Economic Survival Guide." Plus, one lucky survey respondent will win the drawing for a $250 VISA card should they choose to participate. Log in to the Members Only section of the ASA Web site (www.ASAshop.org) today to participate. Your six-digit ASA member number is on the label of this issue of AutoInc.

These are hard times for many. Please let ASA know how we can help you; that's why we're here.

Editor's Note: ASA Shop-Members! The "How's Your Business?" survey has been shortened and moved online for your convenience. We need your participation, and as a "thank you," all those who complete the survey may download AutoInc.'s collection of management features addressing today's economy, plus enter the drawing for a $250 VISA card!
