A Challenge and a Goal for All Members

Posted 7/17/2006
By Charlie R. Elder, AAM

At our annual meeting in Austin, I gave a challenge and a goal to our members who were there. I want to extend the same challenge and goal to all ASA members.

My parents taught me in my early years that most of the time children are naturally self-centered and focused on getting things for themselves with little thought about giving to others. As we become adults, we learn more responsibility and begin to think of others' needs as well as our own. We take on new responsibility as we start our careers, marry and have children.

Besides the obvious needs that our families and businesses create, there are other needs we should consider responding to. I believe that as adults, we have a responsibility to give back to our industry, community and church or place of worship. These three all help us to provide for our families, enjoy life and attain our goals. My challenge pertains to one of these and that is a way to give back to our industry.

I am asking each ASA member to select another shop owner you know and mentor him or her. Invite them to a chapter meeting, an industry or educational function or even take them to a sporting event. Build a relationship and show them the benefit of belonging to a larger group of people helping each other succeed. As the relationship grows, you can invite them to join ASA and receive even more benefits.

The goal is for every current member to sign up one new member this year. If everyone does this, ASA can double in size in 12 months, our industry will improve and thousands of shop owners will benefit from it. Just think: If we all do the same thing next year we could have four times the number of members as we currently have in just two years. Wow! Just think of the possibilities that open up for us.

I have given you the challenge and the goal for this year and I hope you embrace it and do your part. By working together, we can have an awesome year of giving help to others in our industry. Thanks in advance for accepting the challenge and meeting our goals.
