Who Is the Typical ASA Member?Posted 09/10/2004
By Geralynn Kottschade, AAM, Chairman
The typical ASA member. Is there such a thing? Well, yes, when you consider we all have a career choice in common. Yet, we also have our differences. We're unique individuals leading our own lives, but read the following "averages" and see if you recognize yourself among the statistics.
The typical member has been part of the ASA family for more than a year. In fact, 42 percent of us have belonged to ASA for 11 years or more! A mere 7 percent have been members for less than a year (and to you I say, "Welcome!").
Perhaps you have at least two technicians in your business who are between 40 to 50 years old. As for your age, well, let's just say you know who shot J.R.
Whether you operate a mechanical or collision repair business, you've been in the industry 20 years or more and employ at least three ASE-certified technicians. Your employees get paid vacation and holiday benefits, sport uniforms and have the opportunity to carry health insurance through a program you provide. You also promote technician training.
These averages are based on facts obtained through various ASA surveys. But whether you "fit" in this category or not, you're the perfect fit for ASA because our association is all about options. We're chock full of options, in fact! You select the programs and benefits right for you and your business. So whether you have a small or large, new or established business, we have a galaxy of programs designed to save you time and money. You design the benefit program package that best meets your needs. (A complete list of benefits can be found on the ASA Web site, www.asashop.org. Click on the Member Benefits button at the top of the home page. If you haven't reviewed them in a while, I certainly recommend a quick visit.)
In addition to a career choice, we are all alike in this regard: We want to run successful businesses and retain our high-quality employees. Otherwise, how can we serve our valued customers? (By the way, we serve those customers, on average, five days a week. Thought I'd leave you with one more statistic.)
So whether you're a new member or a veteran to this great industry of ours, we're all more alike than we are different. Together we can make the industry a better place for everyone. And ASA's sole motivation is to help you do just that!
