Protecting Your Privacy Online
As the Internet has evolved, advanced technology has made it possible for companies to collect information about a visitor to its Web site. Think about it. Every time you order something online, fill out a guestbook form, or even find the nearest electronics store, companies are logging that information for their database. But legally, these companies can't collect this information without disclosing that fact to you, the site visitor. Here are some things to look for to protect your online privacy.
The No. 1 thing to look for is the company's privacy statement. It should be easy to find, easy to read and easy to understand. For example, ASA places its privacy statement on every page within its Web site and has made every attempt to make the statement understandable. Depending on the type of site you're on, you may be willing to divulge personal information. But make sure you read the privacy policy so you can be comfortable with the amount of information you are providing the company. A good privacy policy should clearly state what information is being collected and how the information is used. But most importantly, make sure the privacy statement says whether or not your information is sent to a third-party company. You should be comfortable with that aspect before proceeding on any Web site.
If you can't find a Web site's privacy statement, be sure to contact the site and ask for a copy of its policy. If it doesn't have one, it's probably a good idea to avoid providing any information to the company.
Also, when reviewing a privacy policy, make sure the Web site offers a way for you to view what information it has collected. You should also make sure that you can cancel your participation at any time.
When you're on a Web site that collects personal information, look for "seals of approval" from third-party companies such as the Better Business Bureau or eTrust. These "seals" mean the Web site has agreed to guarantee it observes what its privacy policy states.
Protecting your privacy is important when surfing Web sites. But by examining the privacy statement before submitting personal information, you will be protecting your identity from malicious behavior.
