Mechanical Repair Shops Show Growth Each Year

By Denise Caspersen

Now that 2001 has entered your business's door, let's review how many independent repair facilities there were each year from 1995 to 2000. With 98 percent of ASA mechanical repair facilities being independent, that's where the focus lies.

In 1995, 63,844 independent mechanical repair facilities were operating in the United States, employing 234,430 individuals and generating nearly $28 billion in total sales.

This increased to 66,780 facilities with 252,107 employees in 1996. Total sales for the independents also increased, to $29 billion in 1996.

Growth continued in 1997, with reports of 68,390 mechanical repair facilities and 265,518 employees ringing up a total of $30,251,000,000 in sales receipts, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Times continued to change in 1998. The number of mechanical shops increased again, to 70,895 facilities employing 270,838 individuals and generating more than $32 billion in total sales receipts.

Early estimates of 1999 numbers point toward an increase in mechanical facilities to 73,376 with 274,088 employees and an estimated $34 billion in total receipts.

Projections for the year 2000 indicate continuation of previous growth trends. It is estimated that there are 75,944 mechanical facilities with greater than 277,000 employees and an estimated $36 billion in total receipts.

Once final numbers for 2000 and 1999 become available, ASA will update the estimated figures and provide an actual count.

In next month's Stat Corner, we will look at trends in the independent collision sector.
